The Rise of Davis Webb: From Quarterback to Coaching Star
In a fascinating turn of events, former New York Giants quarterback Davis Webb has swiftly transitioned into a promising coaching career. Just 46 days after throwing his sole NFL touchdown, Webb found himself guiding the legendary Russell Wilson. But here's where it gets intriguing: Webb's unique journey, which saw him move directly from the Giants' playing field to the Broncos' coaching staff, has sparked recognition as an emerging talent in the coaching world.
The Giants will encounter Webb on the opposing sideline in Denver this Sunday. A familiar face, Webb was their 2017 third-round draft pick and a protégé of Brian Daboll, who guided him during his time with the Bills and later as a backup for the Giants in 2022. And this is the part most people miss: Webb's influence extends beyond the field, as he's now considered a rising star in coaching circles.
Wilson, who will be on the Giants' sideline, had high praise for Webb. "He's incredibly intelligent and passionate about the work," Wilson told The Post. "I always heard he was coaching while playing, and it shows in his preparation and understanding of the position."
The Broncos declined an interview request from The Post regarding Webb's time with the Giants and his unique blend of learning from Daboll and current boss Sean Payton. However, Payton rewarded Webb by allowing him to call plays in a preseason game, a testament to his growing coaching prowess.
Daboll, who started Webb in the 2022 finale, spoke highly of his former player, praising his intelligence and insight. "He offered a lot of good insight in those meetings. I have a great deal of respect for him, and I'm proud of his coaching journey so far."
SI.com's Albert Breer even suggested Webb, at just 30 years old, as a dark horse candidate for the Titans' head coaching vacancy. Wilson echoed this sentiment, predicting a bright future for Webb as an offensive coordinator and potentially a head coach.
But what about the Giants' current state? The team designated OLB Victor Dimukeje to return from the physically unable to perform list, while WR Darius Slayton, C John Michael Schmitz, LB Swayze Bozeman, LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, and CB Deonte Banks all missed practice on Wednesday due to various injuries and personal reasons. Slayton, however, is feeling optimistic about his recovery, saying, "I'm feeling good and making progress every day."
In other news, RB Cam Skattebo was recognized as one of the FedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of the Week for Week 6, alongside the Panthers' Rico Dowdle. As a result, a $2,000 donation was made in Skattebo's name to the Food Bank For New York City.
